오랜만에 영어 공부할겸 처음으로 번역을 해보았는데 그냥 읽는 거하고는 상당히 틀리군요. 적당한 한국어 단어 찾기가 더 어려웠습니다. 그냥 나만 읽는 거면 대충 이해하고 넘어가면 되는데, 일단 다른 사람도 읽을 수 있도록 하려고 하니 단어 선택이 상당히 어렵더군요... -ㅇ-;

아무튼 명사는 자신 없고... 내용은... 그냥 대충 이런 내용인가 보다 하고 읽으시면 되실 듯... ^^;;;

히로시마에 원폭을 투하한 B-29폭격기인 에놀라게이를 조종했던 폴티베츠는 목요일 사망하였다.

92세로 사망한 그는 전후 60여년간 임무에 대한 후회없이 편안한 밤을 보냈다고 강조했었다.

티베츠는 콜럼버스의 자택에서 사망하엿다. 그는 여러가지 건강문제가 있었고 2달동안 악화되었었다.

티베츠는 (생전에) 장례식과 비석이 없기를 원했고, 왜냐하면 그의 반대자들에게 반대운동을 하는 장소가 되는 것을 두려워했기 때문이다라고 그의 오랜 친우인 게리뉴하우스가 말했다.

그의 어머니의 이름을 딴 비행기에서의 티베츠의 역사적인 임무는 2차세계대전 종전의 시점이 되었으며(종전을 앞당겼으며) 유혈 낭자한(큰 피해가 예상되는) 일본으로의 추가진공이 우려되던 군사작전의 필요를 없애주었다. 이것은 전쟁에서의 첫번째 핵병기 사용이었다.

14명의 승무원이 탑승하고 있던 비행기는 1945년 8월 6일 오전에 5톤짜리 폭탄인 리틀보이를 투하했다. 폭발로 인해 약 7만에서 10만가량의 인명이 희생되었으며 셀 수 없을 만큼 (많은) 부상자들이 발생했다.

3일뒤 미국은 일본의 나가사키에 두번째 핵폭탄을 투하했으며 약 4만명의 희생자가 발생한 이 임무에는 티베츠는 참가하지 않았다. 며칠뒤 일본은 항복했고, 전쟁은 끝이 났다.

"나는 임무를 받았을 때 곧 감정(?)의 문제(대량살상에 대한 인간적 고뇌문제?)가 되리라는 것을 알았었습니다."라고 콜럼버스 디스패치사에서 폭탄투하 60주년기념으로 출판한 책에서 말했었다."우리(는/도) 감정을 가지고 있었습니다. 하지만 우리는 그걸 뒤로 미뤄두었어야만 했었습니다. 우리는 많은 사람들이 죽을 것이라는 것을 알고 있었습니다. 그러나 저의 단 하나의 관심(?)은 제가 할 수 있는 최선을 다함으로써 최대한 빨리 죽이는 것(전쟁)을 끝낼 수 있다는 것이었습니다. "

히로시마 비행동안 폭탄의 무장을 담당했던 (폭격수였던? 장교지만 적당한 명칭 모르겠슴. ==;) 모리스 제프슨은 티베츠가 (비행동안) 기운에 가득 차 있었고(적극적이었고?), 존경할 만 했고(신뢰할 수 있는 상급자의 모습이었으며?... 한국어가 더 힘듦...--;), 냉철했었다고 말했었다.

"전쟁은 끝내는 것은 많은 미군들과 일본인, 일본군들을 구했다. 역사는 그를 비난할 이유가 없음을 보여주고 있다."라고 제프슨은 말했다.

서른살의 대령이었던 티베츠는 그의 임무에 대해 후회를 표현하지 않았다. 그는 그것은 애국적인 의무였으며 해야만 했어야 하는 옳은 일이었다고 말했다.

"나는 8만명의 사람을 죽인 것에 대해 자랑스러워 하지 않는다. 하지만 나는 아무것도 없이 시작할 수 있었다는 것, 그리고 계획할 수 있었다는 것, 마지막으로 완벽하게 (설계대로) 기능을 다하였다는 것에 대해 자랑스러워 한다."라고 그는 1975년의 인터뷰에서 말했다.

티베츠의 전기인 "의무: 아버지와 아들 그리고 전쟁을 승리한 사나이.(제목은 그냥 영어가 날 듯... --;)"를 집필한 언론인인 밥 그린은 티베츠가 한 일에 대해 상당히 자긍심을 갖고 있었다고 (긍지있게 보였다고... 역시 한국말이 더 어려운... -.-;;;) 말했다.

그린은 티베츠가 "그들이 원했던 것은 꽁무니를 빼지않고 그 일을 할 수 있는 사람이었고 - 그게 나였지."라했다고 말한다.

폴 워필드 티베츠 쥬니어는 1915년 2월 23일 일리노이의 퀸시에서 태어났고 소년기 대부분을 마이애미에서 보냈다.

그가 육군의 항공대에 지원하기위해 1937년에 학교를 그만두었을 때 그는 신시내티 대학의 의학부의 학생이었다.

전쟁후에 그는 감옥에 있다거나 자살을 시도했다는 루머에 끈질기게 시달렸었다라고 2005년에 말했다.

"연구소 안팎으로 그들은 내가 미쳤다고, 내가 주정뱅이가 됐다고 말했지."라고 말했다.

"그때 나는 펜타곤의 National Crisis Center(국가위기센터???)를 맡고 있었어."

티베츠는 1966년에 준장으로 공군에서 전역했다. 그는 이후 콜럼버스로 이직했고, 1985년에 은퇴할 때까지 이 항공택시서비스 회사를 경영했다.

데이톤에 있는 National Aviation Hall of Fame(명사는 포기... -.-) 은 1996년에 (명예의 전당)에 들어가 있는 티베츠에 대한 photographic tribute(이거 뭐라해야되나요 -.-? 사진헌정???)을 계획하고 있다.

"인류역사상 폴티베츠와 같이 (그토록) 상징적인(? 단어뭘로 해야하지... ???) 무거운 짐을 어깨에 짊어진 채 운반했던 적은 거의 없을 것이다." 성명서(?)에서 론 카플란 디렉터가 말했다. "조국의 국민들에 대한 의무와 명예에 대한 의식으로 폴이 했던 것과 같이 할 수 있었을 사람은 더욱 적을 것이다."

티베츠의 폭격임무는 그의 전생애를 통해 그에게 명성과 불명예를 (동시에) 안겨주었다.

1976년에 텍사스 Harlingen(할링겐? 할링언? 어케 읽는지...)의 에어쇼에서의 폭격 리인액트로 비난을 받게 되었다. 그가 B-29수퍼포트리스를 쇼에서 비행하면서 (투하한), 활주로위에서 폭발하게 설정되어 있던 폭탄이 버섯구름을 만들었던 것이다. (순 의역... 죄송... -.-;;;)

그는 "누구도 모욕하려고 했던 것이 아니었다" 라고 했지만 일본인들은 충격으로 분노했었다. 미국정부는 공식적인 사죄를 표명했다.

1995년, 스미소니안 연구소에서 에놀라 게이의 50주년 기념 전시를 둘러싸고 강한 항의가 분출되었을 때, 티베츠는 다시한번 폭격을 지켜야(옹호해야) 했다.

박물관에서는 폭격의 배경을 설명하는 전시물을 세우는 것을 계획했었다. 배경에 대한 설명은 폭탄을 사용할지에 대한 트루먼 정권에서의 논의를 비롯해서 demonstration bombing(이거 왠지 군사용어인듯한... 직역하면 과시적 폭격인가... ??? --?)의 배제와 목표의 선정과정등을 포함하고 있었다.

Veterans groups(참전용사회?)는 제안된 전시(형태로)는 2차대전 이전과 대전중의 일본의 만행에 대해서 축소하고 일본이 겪었던 고통에 대해서 더 많은 관심을 갖게할 것이며, 그것은 대전중에 스러져간 많은 미국인들이 경시되게되는 결과가 될 것이라고 이의를 제기했다.

그들은 일본에 대한 (핵)폭격은 미국에 대한 악마의 축복(unmitigated blessing 한국어로 어떤 단어를 사용해야될 지 몰라서 대충 의역)이었고, 그 전시는 그렇게(악마의 축복이라고) 말할 것이라고 말했다.

티벳은 "빌어먹을 정도로 엄청난 모욕"이라고 비난했다.

박물관은 계획을 변경했고, 어떠한 주해나 배경설명, 분석설명없이 에놀라게이의 동체만을 전시하는 것에 동의했다.

그는 2005년 Dispatch사에서(아마 이때 인터뷰내지는 핵폭격과 관련한 대화를 했었던 듯) 전쟁기간중 그가 비행하는 것을 좋아했던 영국해협에 그의 재가 뿌려지기를 원한다고 말했다.

뉴하우스(처음에 나왔던 티베츠의 친우)는 티베츠가 화장되기를 원했다고 확인해 주었지만 아직 (티베츠의) 친척들이 어떤 방식으로 그의 영면을 할지는 결정되지 않았다고 말했다.

티베츠는 그의 아내 안드레아와 세 아들 - 폴, 진, 제임스 - 뿐만 아니라 많은 손자 손녀와 증손자 증손녀에 의해서(의지해서) 살아 왔다.(survive 버텨왔다 정도?) 티베츠의 이름을 딴 손자는 그의 할아버지를 따라서 군에 들어왔고, 현재 벨기에에 주둔중인 B-2 폭격기의 조종사로 복무중이다.
