>
>제 1번함은 1973년 4월에 여러 차례의 설계방안을 검토한 끝에 Vickers 조선소에 주문되었으며 2번함은 1976년 5월에 3번함은 1978년 12월에 주문되었다. 1번함은 1973년 7월에 건조가 시작되어 1977년 5월에 진수되었으며 1980년 7월에 취역하여 건조기간만 7년이 걸렸다.
>
>이 유형의 항공모함은 영국의 해군이 유일하게 최초로 개발한 것으로서 기본적으로 지휘 통제 통신 시설을 갖추어 헬기와 단거리 이착륙기의 작전을 수행하는 것이 주요 임무이다. 단거리 이착륙기 해리어 GR Mk 7은 대지 공격임무를 수행하는 것이다. 항공기를 격납고와 연결시키는 항공기용 엘리베이터가 설치되어 있고 수리를 위한 충분한 공간이 확보되어 있다. 이 공간은 또한 미래 개발이 예상되는 보다 중형의 항공기까지를 고려한 것이다.

>3척중 2척은 항상 작전이 가능하고 한 척은 수리 및 교육훈련을 하는 체제로 운용되고 있다.

>최초에는 스키점프 시설이 되어있지 않아 단거리 이착륙기의 항공작전 시간에 많은 제한이 있어 1989년 1월에 27개월에 걸친 대대적인 개선작업을 하였다. 이 때 비행갑판을 12도 경사지게 하는 스키점프 이륙갑판 작업, 최소 21대의 항공기( 해리어 및 조기경보와 대잠 전용헬기)를 지원할 수 있는 공간 확보, 근접 대공방어체계와 소나, 레이다 등 센서와 지휘관용 시설 등이 포함되었다.
