Over 40 years' experience

In 1959, when France decided it needed an independent submarine-based nuclear deterrence capability, the programme contractors faced some major challenges. These included designing a significantly larger submarine, a nuclear plant and a submarine-launched ballistic missile, or SLBM. And, since the nuclear deterrent was to be independent, everything had to be done without the least outside technical assistance.

Latest generation SSBN

The Le Redoutable, the first result of this immense effort and the pride was launched on March 1967.

In 1981, the Navy began thinking about the next generation of nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarines, or SSBNs (the international designation corresponding to the French SNLE). This led to the SNLE-NG programme, the first of type being the Le Triomphant. The challenge on this occasion was to ensure unprecedented stealth.

This was achieved first by designing a submarine that could operate at considerably greater depth and, second, by improving acoustic discretion to the point where the boat would be lost against the background noise of the sea. The new class also featured radically improved sonar systems and a high-performance navigation system compatible with the new-generation type M45 SLBM.

The Le Triomphant was launched in early 1994 and entered service in 1997.

The Le Vigilant, the third SNLE-NG, was launched in 2003.

The Le Terrible, the fourth and final SNLE-NG is under construction and scheduled to be launched in 2009. It will deploy the new-generation M51 missile from the outset. Between 2009 and 2017, the first three SNLE-NGs will be upgraded to deploy the M51.

Scorpene blue-water submarines offer true multirole capabilities. Its new-generation combat system and state-of-the-art underwater weapons represent significant threats for enemy submarines, surface combatants and shipping.

Excellent availability (240 days/year) and endurance (50-day patrols) ensure optimal utilization. Thanks to high-level automation, the boat requires a complement of just 31 -three nine-person watches plus four others. For maximum efficiency, all watch personnel work in the main control room throughout a normal eight-hour watch.

An array of advanced technologies contribute to excellent acoustic discretion and survivability.

Scorpene submarines also offer advanced capabilities for mine warfare, intelligence gathering and special operations.

> Integrated combat system, powerful military capabilities
> Proven AIP and survivability
> Modular design and shipbuilding to meet customer's needs
> Reduced crewing and life-cycle costs

Russia¡¯s Newest Submarine to Be Presented in France

October 25, Russia is to present its new Submarine called the Amur at EuroNaval-2004 in France. The submarine was built by the Admiralty Plant, project number 1650, Rossiyskaya Gazeta reports. It is the most inconspicuous, noiseless and thus most efficient of all known naval technologies, head of the Russian delegation in France Igor Belousov said.

The Amur-1650 is a diesel-electric submarine, designed by St. Petersburg-based Rubin Design Bureau. The boat is 66.8 meters long and 7.1 meters wide, with a 1,765 cubic meters displacement and a crew of 35 people. The Amur¡¯s immersion capacity is 300 meters, full underwater speed – 21 knots. The submarine can stay autonomously under water up to 45 days long.

According to Igor Belousov, the first submarine of this class will come into use with the Russian Navy in three days, on October 28. Head of the Russian delegation stressed that the smaller size of the submarine is part of the world trend, caused by two reasons, first of all the ¡°efficiency-cost¡± parameter, and second – the smaller is the submarine, the less conspicuous it is.

The Amur-1650 is 700 tons of displacement less than its predecessors. Nevertheless, both missile and torpedo equipment have remained as in previous models. The submarine is equipped with 18 533 mm torpedoes. Besides, the Amur class submarines¡¯ particular characteristic is their ability to deliver mass strikes against various targets.

Beside the newest submarine, Russia also presents its large storm-boat of the Zubr class – the largest military air cushion boats of more than 500 thousand tons displacement. Among other achievements - Murena, a multipurpose air-cushion ship, a destroyer and a series of small surface ships and speed-boats.
