The Type 80 was an upgrade of the Type 69/79. An upgrade to an upgrade, so to say; like most tier 10 mediums, they are "super charged" versions of their previous tier 9 fathers.
The Type 80 was a Type 69 upgraded with a slightly different hull, mounting the 105mm L7 copy, and improving its suspension, giving it a better engine, and infrared sights and thermal imaging. The Type 80 prototype was finished in 1985, and the development was finished in 1988. It entered service in the same year and is still used by the People's Liberation Army to this very day.
