체코 경찰은 최근 실물 크기의 판지로 만든 미니스커트 차림 여성 교통경찰(life-sized cardboard cutouts of miniskirt clad female traffic police)을 교통량이 많은 교차로들에 세웠다(install them at busy street junctions). 과속운전을 줄이기(slow down speeding drivers) 위한 묘책을 찾아냈다(hit on a clever scheme)며 기대감에 부풀었다(be filled with anticipation).

운전자들이 미모의 여성경찰을 보기 위해 브레이크를 밟아(put the brake on to see the charming policewoman) 속도를 줄이면서 자연스레 교통사고가 감소할 것으로(reduce traffic accidents) 예상했다. 그러나 충돌사고율에 역효과가 나타났다(backfire on the car crash rates). 오히려 두 배로 늘어났다(cause double the number of accidents).

여성경찰 사진의 올라간 치맛단(a raised hemline), 하이힐 구두, 스타킹, 립스틱에 운전자들의 주의력이 흐트러졌기(get distracted) 때문이다. 남성 운전자들이 경찰제복에 반응을 보이기보다는 본능적으로 다리에 추파를 던지다가(instinctively ogle the officer's legs rather than respond to her uniform) 앞차를 들이박곤 했다.

여성경찰 판지사진 배치는 신호등 설치에 비용이 너무 많이 들어(be too costly) 고육지책으로 내놓은(take a desperate countermeasure) 아이디어였다. 신호등 설치 비용을 줄여보려(save cash on installing traffic lights) 했던 것이다.

그런데 사고가 줄어들기는커녕 도난 사건까지 벌어졌다. 한 라디오방송국이 여성경찰이 추위에 떨지않게 해주려고(help a cardboard policewoman from getting the chills) 모자와 파카를 제공했는데(provide a hat and a parka), 하루도 안 돼 도난당했다(be stolen within a day). 또 다른 곳에선 아예 여성경찰을 통째 훔쳐 달아나는(make off with a female police officer herself) 사건도 발생했다.

체코 내무부는 골칫거리인 문제의 계획을 심각하게 재고하고 있는(be seriously rethinking the troublesome scheme) 것으로 알려졌다.
