Birdshot wound to the head

See how in both cases the shot has had a chance the spread out a bit? With the guy that's been hit with the bidshot you can see how the outer surfaces of the wound are kind of shallow and that it was basically the clump of shot in the center is what did him in. If he had been a little bit farther away and the shot had a chance to spread out even more this might have been a survivable wound (then again it might not have due to the fact that the shot hit him in the head).

For those of you who may not have liked the autopsy photos and thought them gory I'm sorry for the pictures, but this is what we're talking about here (shotgun wounds on bad guys with buckshot or birdshot at close range for the purposes of home defense) and it's better to see what we're actually talking about instead of dancing around the subject. A picture's worth a thousand words.

Even if it's in one very thick clump (like how it is from very close up) birdshot will only end up penetrating between 4 and 6 inches into the human body (less if it hits bone). If you're not close up and the pattern has had a chance to spread out a little bit the surface will look very chewed up and it'll end up looking like a real mess (like the guy above with the birdshot to the face), but many times at that depth the vital organs aren't going to be damaged and that's where you could come into trouble because it ends up depending on how much fight the person you just shot has in them. Some people will cease their attack on you immediately if shot (even if it's a minor hit) and some will keep going until you hit something vital and until you disrupt their nerve impulses and cut blood and oxygen flow to their vital organs and stop them for good, it just depends on the individual person and their willpower and training.

Personally I like the smaller buckshot (#4, #2, #1 or Single 0/those are the buckshot sizes that are most common besides Double 00 Buck). It gives you more chances of hitting something if the pattern spreads out, but it still acts like buckshot and penetrates deeper than birdshot.
