Barracuda Coming Back
Posted by Robert Wall at 12/19/2007 3:21 AM

EADS will get a chance to revive its Barracuda unmanned combat air vehicle demonstrator under the Agile UAV within Network-Centric Environments (Agile-NCE) program.

The German government has teamed with Finnish and Swiss authorities on the new project. Finland joined to find a platform for its UAV Data Link technology progam and, EADS notes, the government also has UAV requirements similar to Germany¡¯s.

Two Finnish industrial partners, Patria and Insta, will participate. On the Swiss side RUAG Aerospace (which is also part of the French-led Neuron UCAV program) will be involved.

It¡¯s the second important go-ahead for EADS unmanned aircraft efforts this month. Earlier, German, Spain and France okayed the risk reduction phase for the Advanced UAV study into a modular unmanned aircraft concept. The two projects are linked in the sense that a future procurement effort would likely build on lessons in both endeavors.

The Agile UAV effort is supposed to assess enabling technologies and operational concepts for unmanned agile reconnaissance operations. The multi-phase program is planned to last until 2013. Initial work will be done in a virtual setting, but later flight trials will be added.

That¡¯s where EADS officials have indicated Barracuda, the demonstrator that crashed last year, could see a come back. The vehicle would be slightly adapted from the initial design, but in many core features will be similar.

But the air vehicle itself is not at the heart of the effort. EADS says ¡°the most prominent tasks are the definition and simulation of missions, of communication links and of platform control under NCE conditions. Flight trials are going to focus on verification and validation of the Agile UAV-NCE concept by performing reconnaissance and sensor-to-shooter missions.¡±
