The F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF): This aircraft shows great promise and looks simply awesome: On paper.
With more software than the F-22 and a variety of cost and development problems, a JSF customer should be concerned.
The over-hyping of this aircraft is impressive. The goal of the aircraft is affordable and exportable stealth. It doesn¡¯t have the survivability of the F-22 with super-cruise and better all aspect stealth.
The JSF narrow band stealth ability is not as safe on the side or rear as the F-22. Is JSF a bad aircraft? Not if it works,
but even if it does it will have stealth ability that limits the threat it can go against.
Low observable (stealth) technologies are a great thing, but they are a bad thing when they are being over-hyped to make a sale.
And worse when the clueless politician turns around and parrots the word ¡°stealth¡± to the over-stressed taxpayer.
The aircraft was designed to be an F-16 and F-18 replacement. It is not a full up super air superiority fighter.

This is not the JSF way. Note the "J" as in "joint". If one wants logistical costs on the JSF to climb,
set up your own software shop and stomp up and down until you get ability to mod the software kit.
This would make no practical sense. Based on the logistics model of JSF,
the whole idea is so a coalition force can go to war with the same air frame and the same sheet of music.
Having one user fiddle with something and do it wrong, ( we know that the Defence establishment has never screwed up a program):
Right, and then you run risk, or have to pay to run risk analysis on all sorts of compatibility modifications
so as not to goof the joint force if you go to war. Wrong jet, wrong program for creative types.
The only software mods Australia should do is if somehow through a JSF program managed event
we end up being the main software house for ALL software mods.
Everyone doing different things to their jets software is a really unwise and poorly thought out idea.
You wouldn't want everybody and their brother doing modifications to a common computer network now would you? Same here.
Want independence? Get a different airframe.

F-22 (0.0001 m2 RCS, @ -40db) and super-cruise and better all aspect stealth vs.
the JSF (0.001 m2 RCS @ -30db). Stealth aircraft perform best at working against radars in the 1-12 GHz range.
JSF being narrow band stealth (X-Band) is about 7-12.5 GHz. And the JSF stealth ability is not as safe on the side or rear as the F-22.
It doesn¡¯t have the super-cruise to lower an enemy missiles no-escape zone. The JSF goal is to be affordable and exportable.
Stealth strike vs. higher risk targets does not mean absence of escort jamming support.
A stealth aircraft doing a strike against serious ground threats will always do better with jamming support aircraft than a stealth aircraft without. Lower band search radars that are big antenna rigs on ship or ground based are going to discover any stealth aircraft. Lower band jamming can be offered by, for example the retired EF-111, soon to be retired EA-6, or the upcoming EA-18G Super Hornet ¡°Growler¡±.
These jamming aircraft work well against these sensors in addition to the higher frequency weapons guidance radars. There is a very strong reason Growlers will be on an aircraft carrier: not just for supporting non-stealth aircraft but for significant support of a JSF strike. Of course besides jamming, one can kill annoying low band search radars. That is what the public isn¡¯t being told. Jamming support and stealth aircraft work together. The public also isn¡¯t being told that stealth works to reduce the threats that will kill you directly: The X band like threats of aircraft radars, guidance for SAMs (Surface to air missiles) and guidance radars for anti-aircraft guns. Generally if radar generates emissions in the X-Band, it is going to have trouble with the front aspect of the JSF. There is nothing wrong with this design for the JSF except when it is being oversold as a super stealth platform. It is not. Once a full up JSF gets into the evaluation of it¡¯s stealth ability during flight testing, the customer will eventually be informed if all the computer predictions and salesmanship matches up to the real world. The generic decibel range of the JSF and F-22 were mentioned in Fighter Fights, AV Week, November 14, 2005. Optimum frequency range of stealth designed aircraft was sourced from, end notes from my blog post
