U.K. Defense Ministry is supporting research into very stealthy or fast cruise missile options

Britain is developing advanced propulsion and stealth technologies to allow it to choose between very low observable and high-speed cruise missile concepts for future long-range strike needs.

The Defense Ministry hopes to begin making key procurement choices on its Future Long-Range Cruise Missile ¡©(FLRCM) around 2015. At that point, the ministry would like to be able to proceed with the ¡°Initial Gate¡± stage of its procurement process.

The notional service-entry date for the FLRCM is now post-2025. It would provide a successor capability to the MBDA Storm Shadow cruise missile. A long-range air-launched precision strike weapon is expected to form an element of the ministry¡¯s Deep and Persistent Offensive Capability. This will also likely include manned aircraft and an unmanned combat air vehicle.

Both high-speed and very-low-observable technologies are being examined, in part to begin to determine their comparative levels of survivability in high-threat environments. For now, however, the ministry¡¯s initial emphasis appears to be in favor of a very-LO subsonic design approach.

The FLRCM design parameters will almost certainly require that the missile have a notably greater range than the Storm Shadow. Fighter aircraft are the anticipated launch platforms, and an increased standoff capability will improve platform survivability. Storm Shadow is believed to have a maximum range in excess of 600 mi.

The ministry¡¯s Defense Science and Technology Laboratory is exploring advanced technologies for potential use in future high-speed weapons, according to Steve Hodder, propulsion and power systems team leader. These include new methods for signature reduction as well as both hypersonic ramjets and pulse detonation engines (PDE).

Research is underway into active stealth technologies, while the ministry is also supporting work into novel materials, suggests another ministry source. In terms of stealth, there¡¯s a tradeoff between the increased cost of very low passive LO technology and the shift to active signature control.

Speaking last week at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Joint Propulsion Conference in Cincinnati, Hodder said the majority of requirements are aimed at propulsion needs related to weapons and large, medium and small UAVs. One ¡°focus is on signature reduction,¡± he says, adding that the work is being conducted in conjunction with the U.K. defense research company Qinetiq.

Although few details are being released, Hodder notes the U.K. is working on advanced propulsion concepts for future missiles, including a hypersonic ramjet project called the Sustained Hypersonic Flight Experiment. This effort aims to demonstrate a ¡°Mach 6-capable ramjet by 2009,¡± says Hodder. Qinetiq is designing the scramjet, which will be flown on a sounding rocket to test its propulsion characteristics.

The ministry also has ¡°a small PDE rig demonstrator¡± underway at Qinetiq, he says. ¡°We are doing analytical studies of pulse detonation engines and high-speed weapon concepts, though we don¡¯t currently see PDEs as being the front-runner for those,¡± he adds.

Despite this, Hodder says the work is being continued to allow the ministry ¡°to maintain visibility of this technology for high-speed weapons.¡±

The high-speed propulsion work is also driving research into several related areas, including high-temperature radar-absorbent materials, cooling and thermal protection, seekers and warhead technologies.

Interest in high-speed and very-LO cruise missiles is being prompted by analysis of the types of air defense threats that may be encountered beyond the mid-2020s, according to the ministry source. The ministry is studying the survivability of a very-LO subsonic cruise missile design.
