US Navy launches supersonic target competition
Acquisition of a target simulating Russia's 3M-54E anti-ship missile, which combines subsonic
and supersonic sea-skimming stages, is moving ahead, with the US Navy issuing a draft
request for proposals for the Multi-Stage Supersonic Target (MSST).

The target will meet the US Navy's Threat D requirement to simulate "a family of missiles with
subsonic cruise, a separation event and supersonic dash", says programme manager Capt
Patrick Buckley. This differs from the supersonic sea-skimming missiles simulated by the
USN's Orbital Sciences GQM-163 Coyote.
**이 표적은 미해군의 Threat D 필수조건을 만족시키는 것으로 아음속 순항, 초음속
돌입하는 미사일군에 대한 모의 훈련 조건이라고... 이것은 초음속 sea-skimming
미사일용인 GQM-163 Coyote와는 다른 것 이리고...
Threat D is not identified, but the 3M-54E - NATO codename SS-N-27 Sizzler - is a
surface/submarine-launched missile that flies for the majority of its 300km (160nm) range at
high subsonic speed. At 60km from the target a solid-rocket terminal stage separates and
accelerates to Mach 2.9 to defeat ship defences.
**Threat D가 확인되지는 않았지만, 3M-54E - NATO 암호명 SS-N-27 Sizzler 가
300KM 의 사정거리를 대부분 아음속으로 비행후, 목표에서 60km 떨어진
지점에서 로켓이 분리되고 본체가 마하 2.9로 가속되어 함대방공망을
파괴시키는 방식이라고...
MSST is required to simulate all phases of the missile's flight, "but the most critical is the
transition dynamics when it goes from subsonic cruise to supersonic sprint", says Buckley.
Potential solutions could include the modification of existing subsonic or supersonic targets or
missiles, he says.
**MSST 는 미사일 비행과정의 모든 단계를 모의재현하는 것을 요구하며,
가장 핵심은 아음속 순항에서 초음속 달리기로 변화하는 단계라고... 기존의
아음속 또는 초음속 표적 또는 미사일을 개조하는 것도 방안에 포한된다고...
More than 25 companies attended an MSST industry day on 31 July, including five to seven
potential primes, says Buckley. The final RFP is expected by late October/early November,
leading to award of a development contract in May/June next year. The US Navy wants "a
realistic, executable approach to development in terms of cost and schedule", he says.
**7/31일 MSST 업계 설명회에 25개 이상의 회사가 참가하였으며, 5~7개 정도의
잠재적 대상이 포함되었다고... 마지막 RFP 는 10월 말, 11월초 가 예상되며,
개발계약은 내년 5/6월경으로... 미 해군은 실질적이고, 실현가능한 개발 접근
방식을 원한다고.... 비용과 일정에 관련하여...

이 방식은 꽤 위협적입니다. 장거리 기동은 저공 아음속비행으로 하고 근거리와서 초음속 비행을 하는 방식인데 60 km 라는 것은 로켓의 비행가능 거리를 의미하고 실제는 시커가 표적을 탐지하는 거리에서 점화될 것으로 봅니다. 일단 초음속비행을 시작해 버리고 나서 시커를 가지고 탐색하며 표적을 찾게되면 표적을 놓칠 가능성이 높기때문입니다. 보통 대형 대함미사일은 50 km 정도의 탐지거리를 가진다고 알려졌지만 3M-54E 의 경우 비교적 작은 ( 러시아 기준으로 ) 미사일이고 2 차 부스터로켔까지 가졌기에 시커의 크기가 그렇게 크지 못할 것으로 봅니다. 아무래도 탐지거리는 40 km 를 넘기 어려울 듯합니다. 그리고 기존형이 400 kg 대의 탄두였는데 초음속 진입형은 200 kg 미만의 소형탄두를 가진 것으로서 원래 목표인 항모를 공격하는 용도로는 좀 작습니다. 어쨋든 매우 위협적인 대함미사일인 것은 분명합니다. 개인적인 욕심으로는 한국형 순항미사일을 기본으로 종말 초음속 대함미사일을 개발하면 어떨까 생각합니다.
