China looks to equip its H-6 with long-range cruise missile to extend the aging platform's
combat utility

The Chinese air force may be pursuing a strategic stand-off land-attack capability using an
upgraded version of its H-6 bomber, and a long-range air-launched cruise missile, likely a
version of its DH-10.

At least one prototype of the upgraded Xian H-6, possibly known as the H-6K, has been built
and reportedly test-flown. A poor quality image of the aircraft shows it carrying three large
cruise missiles under the wing.

China has already deployed a limited number of the conventionally armed DH-10 land-attack
cruise missiles in its ground-launched variant. The missile--carried in a transporter erector
launcher-vehicle in a triple-pack configuration--is thought to be slant, rather than vertically,
launched.

The H-6, despite being a license-built copy of the obsolete Tupolev Tu-16 Badger, continues to
be the mainstay of China's bomber force. Efforts on the part of Beijing to acquire the Tu-22M
Backfire as a Badger replacement have been ongoing for the last decade, but apparently have
yet to come to fruition.

A first-generation land-attack missile, the KD(YJ)-63 has already been shown with the H-6. This
missile is based on the YJ-6 airframe, and uses a turbojet engine. Terminal guidance is
provided by an electro-optical sensor. The claimed range for this system has been cited as
200-500 km. (124-310 mi.).

By comparison the DH-10 has a reported range of about 1,500 km. Its guidance system is also
considerably more sophisticated. It is thought to use an inertial navigation coupled with GPS.
Some form of electro-optical method--possibly digital scene matching--is used for target
acquisition in the terminal phase.

The DH-10 is similar in general configuration to the U.S.'s Tomahawk, with mid-body wings, and
a cruciform tail. The exact status of the development program for an air-launched version is not
known. The missiles displayed on the aircraft were probably mock-ups. It is also unclear as to
whether or not the air force has any interest in fielding a nuclear-armed variant of the DH-10.

Details of the upgrade to the H-6 have also yet to be made public by the air force, although the
aircraft may have an improved powerplant. There are suggestions that the WP-8 turbojet has
been replaced by a model of the D-30, which is used by the Ilyushin Il-76. The image of the
H-6K might show a slightly different engine inlet shape. Avionics and mission system
improvements are also likely to have been introduced.

The H-6 has a combat radius of 1,800 km. This, coupled with the stand-off range of the DH-10
missile, would considerably improve the air force's ability for power projection. While even an
upgraded H-6 is obsolete by Western standards, the stand-off range conferred by the DH-10
would provide an aircrew with the potential to avoid heavily defended airspace.

It is not known whether, in addition to the maximum of six missiles on wing pylons,
any missiles could be carried in the internal bay.

The DH-10 is one of several capable missile systems either in development or being introduced
into service as the air force works to improve its weapons inventory. The KD-88 electro-optically
guided medium-range missile will provide the service with an indigenously designed tactical air-
to-surface missile. Development work is also underway on GPS/laser-guided munitions.

The air force is continuing to integrate "local" weaponry onto its J-11B variant of the Sukhoi Su
-27 Flanker. The J-11B is fitted with Chinese radar and engines, and the aircraft now appears to
be the focus of intense work. The Luoyang PL-12 active radar-guided air-to-air missile is being
integrated on the aircraft. A recent image on the Internet showed two dummy PL-12 rounds
carried between the engine bays on a J-11B prototype.

The PL-12, which utilizes Russian subsystems, has a performance envelope greater than the
basic model of the Russian R-77 (AA-12 Adder). The R-77 has been supplied to China as part
of the weapons package for the Su-27. The air force also appears to be looking to replace the
Russian R-73 (AA-11 Archer) infrared dogfight missile on the J-11B. Images showing the PL-8
(Python 3) fitted to the outboard wing pylon and wingtip rail of a J-11B have also been posted.
