Ⅰ. 미합중국 육군에 대한  
 
 
기본 이해 
 
1. 계급 체계
 (사병과 초급간부 중심 간략한 설명)




대한민국 국군 계급 체계는 다들 아시다시피 병, 부사관, 준사관, 사관(장교) 4가지로 분류됩니다. (군인사법 제3조)
미합중국 육군 계급 체계는  Enlisted(입대자 즉 사병, 부사관), Warrant Officer (기술준사관), Officer (장교) 
3가지로 분류하되
E-3 까지는 우리군의 사병이고, E-4 부터는 사실상 NCO (Non-commissioned Officer 임관못한 간부라는 의미인듯) 라고 해서 우리의 부사관개념인 것 같습니다.
O-1 부터가 CO (Commissioned Officer 임관한 간부 즉 장교라는 의미인듯) 라고 해서 우리의 소위계급인 정식 장교 개념입니다.
사실상 우리계급이 미군의 계급을 차용한 것이겠지요.
W-1부터 W-5 는 우리의 준사관 같은 기술준위 개념입니다. 헬기 조종사와 같은 특수기술직입니다.
 
따라서 단순 나열 순서로 미군의 Corporal 을 작대기 3개인 우리군의 상병과 동일시 하면 안됩니다. 굳이 따지자면 우리의 하사와 비슷한 개념일 겁니다.
 

So, how long does it take to get promoted in the Army? Remember, it's dependent on the particular MOS (job) and how many vacancies (due to separations and retirements) there are in that job. On average, however, one can expect to be promoted with the following time-in-service (2001 statistics):
2001년 통계이긴 합니다만 참고로 본다면 기본적인 병과에서 특별한 사유가 없을 경우 진급에 소요되는 평균적인 기간입니다.기간을 우리처럼 딱딱 떨어지게 일률적으로 말하지 못하는 이유는 전원이 직업군인이다보니 진급루트나 요건이 병과나 학력, 군내교육수료여부, 복무기간, 전공 여부등에 따라 다양하기 때문으로 보입니다.
  • Private (E-2) - 6 months
  • Private First Class (E-3) - 1 year
  • Specialist/Corporal (E-4) - 18 months
  • Sergeant (E-5) - 4.2 years
  • Staff Sergeant (E-6) - 8.5 years
  • Sergeant First Class (E-7) - 13.6 years
  • Master Sergeant/First Sergeant (E-8) - 17 years
  • Sergeant Major (E-9) - 20.8 years


The Army has 401,138 enlisted members on active duty. Here's how it breaks down, by enlisted rank:
  • Private (E-1) - 20,284 (5.1%)
  • Private (E-2) - 3,334 (9.1%)
  • Private First Class (E-3) - 56,757 (14.1%)
  • Specialist/Corporal (E-4) - 107,634 (26.8%)
  • Sergeant (E-5) - 73,034 (18.2%)
  • Staff Sergeant (E-6) - 56,664 (14.1%)
  • Sergeant First Class (E-7) - 36,725 (9.2%)
  • Master Sergeant/First Sergeant (E-8) - 10,541 (2.6%)
  • Sergeant Major (E-9) - 3,165 (0.8%)
미육군 사병,부사관 중에서 사실상 우리의 사병에 속하는 E-1, E-2, E-3 의 비율이 대략 28% 정도랍니다.
미육군이 모병제로 바뀐 이후 사실상 전병력의 직업군인화 이후 우리의 병장 만기제대기간인 20개월 이상이 기본적인 진급요건에 해당하는 E-4 Specialist나 Corporal 이상의 숙련 병력이 70%에 육박한다는 의미입니다.

우리 특수전사령부 산하의 병력이 대부분 부사관중심임을 보았을 때 단순 장비를 떠난 군숙련도면에서 미육군 전체병력이 갖는 전투력과 우리육군을 비교해보는 것도 의미가 있을 것으로 보입니다.


Army promotions are controlled by time in service (TIS) and time in grade (TIG).
PVT Promotion Requirements: No TIS or TIG requirements are needed for this rank.
PV2 Promotion Requirements: Automatic promotion with 6 months TIS or 4 months TIS with a waiver.
PFC Promotion Requirements: Automatic promotion with 12 months TIS and 4 months TIG. With waiver, Six months TIS and two months TIG.
SPC Promotion Requirements: Automatic promotion with 24 months TIS and 6 months TIG. With waiver, 18 Months TIS and 3 months TIG.
CPL Promotion Requirements: For advancement to Corporal most units require the soldier to hold a leadership position, such as a team leader. A promotion to Corporal can occur directly from Private First Class to Corporal or laterally for Specialists.
SGT Promotion Requirements: Primary Zone — Board appearance at 34 months TIS and 6 months TIG as an E-4. Earliest Promotion can occur is at 36 months TIS with at least 8 months TIG.
 Requirements for Secondary Zone — Board Appearance at 16 months TIS and 4 months TIG. Earliest Promotion can occur is at 18 months TIS with 6 months TIG.
SSG Promotion Requirements: Primary Zone — Board appearance at 72 months TIS and 8 months TIG. Earliest Promotion can occur is at 72 months TIS with 10 months TIG.
 Requirements for Secondary Zone — Board appearance at 46 months TIS with 5 months TIG. Promotion can occur at 48 months TIS with 7 months TIG at the earliest.
SFC Promotion Requirements: Primary Zone consideration starts to occur at around 35 months TIG as an
 E-6. Requirements for Secondary Zone — varies based on the needs of the Army but for 2010 required a minimum of 23 months TIG as an E-6. The Sergeant First Class board memorandum of instruction (MOI) has not been released for 2011 as of early September. Last year's board occurred in February.
MSG Promotion Requirements: Primary Zone consideration starts at around 41 months.
Requirements for Secondary Zone —varies based on the needs of the Army but usually requires 30 months TIG as a minimum for consideration.
1SG Promotion Requirements: In addition to the required TIS and TIG for the Master Sergeant, the First Sergeant must be filling a slotted role as First Sergeant of a unit.
 
미군 진급기준은 일반적 요건인 Primary Zone, 조기진급 요건인 Secondary Zone 이 있다고 합니다.
애시당초 입대시 계급시작점이 일률적이지도 않고 육군에서 원하는 소정의 학력이나 경력에 따라서 달리 시작할 수 있는 유연성이 있습니다.




Band of Brothers 의 1SG (First Sergeant) Lipton 



" First Sergeant Lipton? Your honorable discharge as an enlisted man,
 and your battle field commission as a second Lieutenant." 라며 소위로 임관했다며 임명장을 줍니다.
 
(재미로 드라마 보면서 일일이 계산해보기도 애매하여 따져보지는 않았지만) 드라마기도 하고 전시라 전공을 세우면 진급들이 좀 빠른 감도 있습니다.



아시다시피 주인공인 Winters 는 전공을 많에 세워 소령까지 전시 고속 진급을 합니다. 자신을 괴롭히던 대위 Soble을 딱 마주치자
역시나 험한꼴 당하기 싫었던 Soble 대위는 애써 고개를 돌리지만 Winters는 같이 고생한 부하들이 보란듯이 잡아 세우고 명언을 남깁니다.
" We salute the rank, not the man " (경례는 계급에 하는 것이지 사람에 하는게 아니다.)
 
















 
 
2. 봉급 체계  
 
 
 
물론 본봉이고 실수령액은 우리군과 같이 여기에 갖가지 교육수당, 작전수당 등
수당들이 붙는다는 것을 감안하고 보시면 될 듯 합니다.

러프하게 환율을 1$당 1100원 잡았을때
Corporal 1호봉이 본봉 2000$이고 한국돈 220만원 정도입니다...
세계 최강대국과 비교 자체가 무의미할 수 있지만

4. 여단중심의 미육군 부대 개편 
 
한 때 천조국이라 불리던 미국도 세계적인 경기불황으로 인한 국방 예산 삭감, 냉전처럼 적국이 분명하던 시대의 전면전을 상정하고 편제되었던 사단중심의 부대조직에서 테러와의 전쟁같은 동시다발적인 전세계 국지전 어디로든 빠른 전력투사 필요성 제기, 일선 전투 지휘관들의 대규모 사단중심 전투부대 운영의 유연성 부재 호소 등으로 인하여 의 기존 사단(Division)중심에서 여단(Brigade)중심의 작전부대 단위로 대대적인 개편이 있었고 현재도 진행중인 것 같습니다.
 
하지만 여전히 사단단위의 지휘체계와 부대조직은 존재합니다.

각 사단별 사진은 시간상 주말에나 올려보도록 하겠습니다.

미국의 인구가 2014년 3억1800만 정도입니다.
어지간한 국가만한 주를 50개 가지고 있으니 세계최강 군사대국의 육군이 10개 사단만 있는건 아닐겁니다.
엄연히 현역에서 활발하게 뛰고있는 즉 전세계 분쟁에 현업으로 전투참가하고 있는 사단이 10개입니다.
각주마다 사단 2개씩만 해도 100개가 나옵니다. 준전시상황의 대치중이라는 특수성을 감안하더라도 플로리다 반도보다 작은 대한민국 육군에 사단이 소위 메이커 사단만 몇 개인지를 생각해본다면 대충 비교가 되리라 봅니다.

    제가 개인적으로 글 읽는걸 싫어해서 쓰는건 10배 싫어하기 때문에 그림이나 사진을 좋아합니다. 그래서 서술은 많이 없고 직관적으로 사진 나열을 죽 해봤는데 지식이 많이 부족해서 틀린부분이 많을 겁니다. 틀린부분은 회원님들께서 정정해주시면 너무 감사하겠습니다.

    계급같은건 준비하던거랑 많이 겹치네요...
    몇가지 알려드리자면... Warrant Officer는 기술 준사관이 아닙니다. 의미 그대로 장교 권한을 '부여받은' 계급입니다. 즉, 명령권을 가지고 전투병력을 이끄는 위치입니다. 그런 이유로 지상 전투부대가 없는 미 공군의 경우 준위가 없습니다. 타 군의 경우, 직접 전투병력을 통솔하는 소대장 (Platoon Leader) 는 정규 장교가 아닌 준위가 맡는 경우도 많은 것으로 압니다. 또한 NCO의 경우 임관받지 못한 장교가 아닌 부사관을 뜻하는 말인데... 우리랑은 다르게 NCO는 부사관 '임관'을 받고 부사관이 되는 것이 아니기 때문에 non-commissioned 즉, 임관하지 않았다는 말을 쓰는 것입니다.
    Officer 란 단어도 간부가 아닌 장교지만 NCO, CO에서의 Officer는 장교가 아닌 '복무자' 라는 뜻으로 보셔야 합니다.

    우리나라 사병 진급속도랑 미군하고 비슷했군여.. 예전에 카투사에서 울나라 병사가 상병,병장 다는걸 미군들은 신경도 안쓴다는걸 본적있는데

    Leadership Responsibility

    Specialists can manage the activities of lower-ranking soldiers, but corporals are endowed with leadership responsibilities. Specialists are the highest of the junior enlisted ranks, while corporals are the lowest ranking of all noncommissioned officers, or NCOs. Corporals are responsible for implementing the orders of the officers and higher ranking NCOs in their chain of command, including seeing to the training and personal appearance of the soldiers in their units. Specialists are more focused on the technical aspects of their military occupational specialty.

    Specialists도 후임들을 다룰 수 있습니다. 하지만 corporals에게는 리더책임이 부여됩니다. Specialists는 사병중 최고계급이고 corporals은 부사관중 최하계급입니다. Corporals은 지휘계통에서 CO나 NCO상급자의 지시명령사항을 이행할 책임이 있습니다. 가령 자신이 맡은 팀원들의 개인상태나 훈련상황을 확인하는 것들입니다. Specialists는 자신이 맡은 병과의 기술적인 부분에 좀 더 집중합니다. (2차 대전 때Technician계급이 지금의 스페셜리스트 개념인 것 같습니다. Band of Brother를 보면 테크니션들이 몇 명 보이는데 주로 무전병, 보급, 통역 이런 역할을 하는 것 같습니다.)


    Pay Grade

    Although a corporal in the U.S. Army outranks a specialist, both ranks share the E-4 pay grade and are paid at the same rate, based on time in service. Corporals and specialists with less than two years in service earned $1,979.70 as of the 2013 fiscal year, with a pay raise to $2,081.10 after two years, another raise to $2,193.90 after three years and to $2,304.90 after four years in service. Basic pay for the E-4 pay grade tops out at $2,403.30 after six years of service.

    비록 corporal이 specialist보다 높지만 미육군 급여체계에서는 동급으로 취급됩니다.


    Enlistment and Promotion

    The rank of specialist is more prevalent in the U.S. Army than the rank of corporal. Corporals are more likely to be found in the combat arms branches, such as the infantry, artillery and armor, than in the support or service support branches, such as the medical corps, transportation or administration. Soldiers are typically promoted to either corporal or specialist from the rank of Private First Class, but in some cases commanders can promote soldiers of lower rank but with exceptional leadership skills. Private citizens who hold at least a bachelor's degree might enlist with the rank of specialist. There is no provision for enlisting with the rank of corporal.

    미육군에서는 specialist 계급이 corporal에 비해 일반적입니다. Corporals 은 의무, 수송, 행정등 지원병과 보다는 보병, 포병, 기갑 등 전투병과에서 좀 더 일반적입니다. 대원들은 전형적으로 Private First Class에서 corporal 또는 specialist로 진급합니다. 하지만 예외적으로 특출난 리더십능력이 있을 경우 지휘관이 Private First Class보다 더 낮은 계급에서 corporal 또는 specialist로 진급시킬 수 있습니다. 민간인이 지원입대할 경우 4년제 학사 학위소지자는 specialist부터 시작 할 수 있는데 corporal부터 시작하는 제도는 없습니다.

    4개의 BCT를 3개로 바꾸면서, 통째로 한개의 BCT를 삭제하면 반발도 있으니(ex. 밴드오브브라더스로 유명한 101사단 506연대 이지중대: 4BCT해체->1,3BCT에 분산배치당함), 남아있는 3개의 BCT에다 분산배치하는 경우도 있더군요.

    귀곡자님. 잘봤습니다. 보기 좋게 잘 설명해놓으셨네요. 준사관인 준위도 5등급으로 나누어지는군요. 전에 기차에서 본 미군의 계급이 궁금해었는데 준위 w-4 였네요. 그리고 제 개인적인 생각입니다만은 non - commissioned officer는 권한이 없는 간부(officer) 즉, 명령권이 없는 간부 라는 뜻이 아닐까 합니다.

    미군계급중에 헷갈리리는것이 Specialist인데 원래 Corporal부터 지휘권(분대장 등)이 있는데 Specialist는 지휘권이 없다는 이야기도 있고... 그런데 해군은 이병부터 대장까지 계급 호칭이육군과는 전혀 달라라서 더 헷갈리죠. Captain이 육군, 공군에서는 대위이지만 해군은 대령이고...
