I've been looking for an English-language report on this all day. Yes, the Panther wasn't exactly a secret; neighbors are quoted with saying this guy named only as Klaus-Dieter F. was driving it through town when it was the only vehicle that could after a blizzard back in 1978, and once helped somebody pulling out treestumps with it. Reports also say he sometimes sold a couple torpedos, went out on the Kieler Forde inlet with a Schwimmwagen, and among his collection had an AA and/or AT gun as well as a V-1.
He showed up on the radar of authorities recently when they got a tip that he had some long-lost Nazi art, namely "The Wehrmacht" by Arno Breker which was sculpted for Hitler's chancellery in 1939. This was part of a national bust that also turned up some giant bronze horses from the Nuremburg rally grounds by Josef Thorak and other bigger-than-life sculptures. They had been missing since the end of the war; as it turns out they languished on various Soviet bases in East Germany, where they were found and bought for something like a couple thousand mark per deal by enterprising West German businessmen who proceeded to sell them on for a couple million.
However, the German government claims ownership to the stuff, and the thing unraveled over the last months after a private art investigator from the Netherlands posed as an interested buyer. The art raids were in late May, but the first reports of "tank found in basement" only appeared yesterday. His attorney says it's all demilled and legal, but today they started dragging it out; the Bundeswehr sent two AEVs for the Panther which seemed wedged into an inconvenient spot. Since the last sightings in the wild date back 20 years, it's probably no longer a runner (pictures show it without tracks), but they eventually managed.
