안녕하십니까? 군사고문관입니다.
오늘은 날로 세력이 커져가는 중국인민해방군 (PLA : People‘s Liberation Army)의 공개되지 않았던 무기 개발 시험장과 그에 따른 결과물을 소개해 드리고자 합니다. 일전에 Mojave님과 열도정벌님께서 터키 레일건과 중국 레일건의 모습들을 이곳 BEMIL 사진자료실에서 소개를 해 주신 적이 있었습니다. 그러한 레일건의 군사적 효용성과 기술적 노하우는 단시간에 이루어지는 것이 아닙니다. 동맹과 우방이라는 관계속에서 전략적 이해관계가 맞아떨어질 경우 기술적 제휴와 제한적이지만 공여도 가능한 것이 동맹국간의 무기 수출과 제공이기도 합니다.
미국과 한국도 오랜 우방이라는 관계 속에서 미국의 제한적이기도 하였고 일방적인 구매 압박 속에 무기 시장에서 미국제 무기 구입의 비율을 늘려만 갔었던 적도 있었습니다만 미국과의 군사적 동맹을 통해 일본과 전략적 동맹을 맺기도 하였으며 욕심많은 중국을 경제적으로는 친화적으로 교류를 하였으면서도 시간이 지나 미국과의 동맹 관계의 근본이 흔들리고 있는 가운데 중국의 무기 개발 능력과 그 결과물을 이곳을 통해 알려드리고 중국에 대한 경계심을 한층 강화시켜 나가야 한다는 것이 저의 생각입니다.

Satellite imagery has revealed two unusually large artillery pieces, measuring about 80 ft and 110 ft respectively, at a 1) test centre for armour and artillery northwest of Baotou in China.
2)The two pieces, which are horizontally mounted, are mounted on a concrete pad that appeared between September 2010 and December 2011, when the two pieces were first captured by satellite imagery. Images provided by Astrium confirmed that the objects were still in place in July 2013.
The 2011 imagery clearly depicts a series of what appear to be targets in front of the 110 ft piece, suggesting some kind of penetration testing for high-velocity projectiles.
China has historically shown interest in large calibre, long-range artillery. It experimented with the Xianfeng 'supergun' in the 1970s as part of Project 640 anti-ballistic missile programme. Approximately 85 ft long, Xianfeng may be the smaller of the two objects retained for experimental use after its cancellation in 1980.
In the 1990s it was revealed that China had built a long-range 'supergun' technology testbed similar to the Iraqi Project Babylon supergun designed by Gerald Bull. IHS Jane's Land Warfare Platforms: Artillery & Air Defence notes that Bull was heavily involved in designing long-range Chinese artillery systems for Norinco in the 1980s.
The larger Baotou artillery piece outwardly resembles the Project Babylon 'supergun', which was theoretically capable of extreme-range artillery barrages or of targeting orbiting satellites. Bull's 'Baby Babylon' testbed measured 150 ft in length, compared with the 105 ft-long larger piece at Baotou.
COMMENT
Although the Baotou pieces appear similar in design to the Bull 'supergun' concept, it seems unlikely that they are intended for long-range artillery barrages or anti-satellite operations given China's extensive long-term development of ballistic missiles for both of these missions.
Alternatively, the devices could also be railgun prototypes, although this appears unlikely as there is no significant external power routed to the test pad and a lack of environmental protection. The other possibility is that China is simply reusing the legacy systems from its long-range artillery programmes from the 1970s and 1990s as part of a projectile test range - a view that is supported by the presence of what appears to be 'used' targets on the northwest side of the pad.

2013년 7월 19일, 프랑스의 Astrium社(프랑스 남부 똘루즈 toulouse에 소재한 기업) 광학위성(optic satellite)이 내몽골주 바오터우(包頭)시(중국 네이멍內蒙古 구 자치구 최대 공업도시, 주요철강공업기지가 소재) 북서쪽에 있는 중국의 지상군 장비 테스트센터에서 2개의 구조물을 발견했었다고 합니다.
110ft(33m)와 80ft(24m)에 달하는 두 개의 포신이 콘크리트로 타설되어 개간되어진 지상에 고정된 이 구조물은 2010~11년 사이에 처음 발견되었고, 2013년 7월까지도 해당 장소에 그대로 남아있었다고 합니다.

바오터우 시내에서 북서쪽으로 약 30km 떨어진 곳에 일련의 포대와 탄약고, 기갑차량의 주행시험을 위한 트랙을 갖춘 시설을 볼 수 있습니다.

위성사진을 보시면 110ft 시험포신에서 시험발사된 것으로 보이는 포탄의 흔적이 20~30cm 두께의 표적 5개를 관통한 후 지면에 착탄흔을 남긴 흔적이 보입니다. 착탄흔은 시험포구에서 약 240m 정도 떨어져 있었다고 합니다. 시험포신 자체가 수평으로 고정되어 포탄을 멀리 날려보낼 수 없었던 구조였다고 합니다.
이 곳을 통해 과거 제랄드 불의 이라크 Super Gun 계획이었던 Baby Babylon Proj.(베이비 바빌론 계획)을 모방하여 China Super을 개발하려는 의도가 있었지 않았나 생각이 되며 이 계획은 현재 개발되어 운영 시험중인 China Rail Gun 개발에도 분명한 연관이 있는 것으로 판단됩니다.

미국 정보기관은 중국의 레일건에 대한 평가를 언론을 통해 흘리기도 하였다고 합니다.
미 언론매체(CNBC)는 미국 정보기관의 보고서를 인용해 중국이 레일건 시험발사를 마쳤으며 추정되는 성능부터 비용까지 나열했습니다.
200km 밖 목표물을 90초 이내 타격할 수 있는 능력이 있다고 밝혔습니다.
성능은 약 초속 2.6km, 사거리는 200km, 한 발을 시험 발사시 한화로 약 2796만원~5592만원이 비용이 발생한다고 합니다.

해군 함선에 레일건이 장착되었지만 사막 시험장에서 성능개선 실험 개발을 계속하고 있는 것으로 확인되었습니다.
그리고 아직 공개되지 않은 중국의 슈퍼건을 장비한 초대구경 자주포 그림입니다.
그림에서 보는 바와 같이 대륙간탄도탄 운반 차량에 쓰이는 6*6 TEL 과 같은 차량에 초 대구경 포신을 얹은 자주포 차량을 개발하고 여기에 자동으로 포탄을 장전하는 화차 차량, 그리고 사거리가 약 600km 라고 합니다.
이 차량은 대만과 한국을 겨냥한 무기체계라고 합니다. 이 무기체계에 사용되는 포탄과 포신 또한 위에 소개된 바오터우 시험장에서 개발,시험되었다고 합니다.

- 미국처럼 그 넓은 땅에서 비밀리에 무기 개발, 실사격 시험을 맘껏 할수 있다는 사실은 부러움, 동경의 대상이지요.
