THAAD is a ground-based defensive system that will intercept incoming theater ballistic missiles at higher altitudes and greater distances than existing systems. Lockheed Martin, the THAAD prime contractor, is also proposing an international version of THAAD for sale to U.S. allies. The THAAD team achieved two consecutive target intercepts in tests conducted on June 10 and Aug. 2, 1999 from White Sands Missile Range, NM. Following the two historic intercepts, the THAAD team submitted its proposal to move into the Engineering and Manufacturing Development (EMD) phase of the program. The approximate $4 billion contract for THAAD EMD was awarded to the Lockheed Martin-led contractor team in June 2000.
