the maximum effective range of the ESSM is in excess of 50 km, perhaps as long as 80 km (48 statute miles).
With a rule of thumb 40-60% increase for doubling fuel, the resulting range would be around 130 km (78 statute miles). Existing rocket motor-powered ESSMs have a range of 50 kilometers (31 miles).
With a ramjet engine, the company believes an upgraded ESSM would have a range of over 400 kilometers (248 miles).
Ramjet engines scoop up atmospheric oxygen as they fly, rather than carrying it from the ground as part of a solid motor. (They do require a solid booster to accelerate them to speeds where ramjet combustion is able to be sustained efficiently.
a ramjet-sustainer missile can carry more fuel than a solid-propellant missile of the same size, and so fly farther and faster. A ramjet-powered SAM could be used against comparatively fast high-altitude targets while still under power, at ranges at which solid-propellant missiles would be burned out and rapidly losing energy.

Hypersonic cruise missiles
This type of missile reaches its target with the help of a high-speed jet engine that allows it to travel at extreme speeds, in excess of Mach-5. It is non-ballistic - the opposite of traditional Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM) which utilises gravitational forces to reach its target.

Hypersonic glide vehicles
This type of hypersonic missile utilises re-entry vehicles. Initially, the missile is launched into space on an arching trajectory, where the warheads are released and fall towards the atmosphere at hypersonic speeds. Rather than leaving the payload at the mercy of gravitational forces – as is the case for traditional ICBMs – the warheads are attached to a glide vehicle which re-enters the atmosphere, and through its aerodynamic shape it can ride the shockwaves generated by its own lift as it breaches the speed of sound, giving it enough speed to overcome existing missile defence systems. The glide vehicle surfs on the atmosphere between 40-100km in altitude and reaches its destination by leveraging aerodynamic forces.
